THE MEANING BEHIND THE FLAG

The Flag of Valor — Explained

From the names woven throughout its stripes to the agencies represented among its stars, every element was intentionally designed to preserve a part of the story.

01

The Stripes: The Roster of Courage

The stripes of Old Glory are transformed into an eternal ledger containing 1,793 verified first responders, along with collective recognition for 1,541 civilian first responders and volunteers who paid the ultimate sacrifice without hesitation.

The Red Lines: Inscribed with the names and ranks of 793 firefighters and 64 EMS personnel who ran toward danger and gave their lives in the towers and in the ongoing toxic-exposure illness crisis that followed.

The White Lines: Bearing the names and ranks of 664 law enforcement personnel from local, state, and federal departments who stood as shields and held the line during the nation's darkest hour.

02

The Blue Field: Fifty Agencies of Valor

The deep blue canton honors the unprecedented unity of emergency services.

Over each individual star, the flag bears the name of one of the 50 first responder agencies that suffered the loss of at least one member of service, commemorating their collective devotion to duty across jurisdictions and state lines.

The Foundation Logo & Centerpiece Artistry

Bordering the lower white field is the foundation's official emblem, bringing together imagery representing faith, duty, sacrifice, service, and remembrance.

The Silhouette of Guardians: First responders in full uniform stand facing the World Trade Center towers, representing the resolve of those who entered the smoke.

The Light of Hope: Morning sunlight breaks through the silhouette of the Twin Towers, casting a radiant, faded beam in the shape of a cross.

The Soldier's Field Memorial: A kneeling soldier beside the battlefield cross—inverted rifle, boots, and helmet—honors military servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Global War on Terror.

The Yellow Ribbon: A yellow ribbon carries the nation's prayer for the safe return of active veterans and deployed personnel.

The American Flag Backdrop: Flowing behind the emblem, the American flag represents the compassion, blood, and treasure poured out by those represented in the tribute.

The Badges, Medallions & Title

The 25th Anniversary Badge: Marks a quarter-century of remembrance and resilience.

The Bookend Motto Badges: Two shields carry the guiding messages “Freedom is Not Free” and “Honor Their Sacrifice.”

The Title: Presented as “The Flag of Valor,” with “The Flag of Heroes” designated for an exclusive limited run.

The Churchill Dedication: Beneath the title appears the tribute, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few,” underscoring the debt of gratitude owed to those who served and sacrificed.

05

Verification & The Living Promise

Interactive QR Code & Website: The bottom border incorporates the official website and a scannable QR code connecting visitors with the continuing remembrance mission.

The Living Promise: The core flag remains historically consistent, although slight design variations may appear in logos or titles. As research into September 11-related illnesses continues, newly confirmed names may be incorporated into future editions so that remembrance continues to grow with the historical record.
